Catcher's Equipment
Gear up behind the plate with a complete catcher's set or build it piece by piece - helmets and masks, chest protectors and leg guards in youth and adult sizes - then finish with a catcher's mitt to match.
Nothing protects like gear that fits: our catcher's gear fitting guide sizes every piece
Fit is what makes it protective, so size by age and measurements using our catcher's gear fitting guide. A chest protector and leg guards that are too big leave gaps.
A catcher's set bundles the essentials - a helmet/mask, chest protector and leg guards. Add a catcher's mitt to finish the kit.
A set is the easiest way to get matched protection at a lower cost, but buying pieces separately lets you mix brands or replace worn items without buying everything again.
Check padding and shell integrity each season - foam compresses over time and cracked or worn plastic no longer absorbs impact the way it should, especially for growing youth players.
Some leagues and levels require certified masks (like NOCSAE-approved), so it's worth checking your league's rules before buying, especially when moving up from house league to travel or high school ball.
Manufacturers use a three-tier sizing system:
Youth: about ages 9 to 12
Intermediate: about ages 12 to 15
Adult: about ages 15 and up
Beginner kits are also available for catchers around ages 6 to 8. Since these age ranges are approximate, use the measurements in our catcher’s gear fitting guide for a precise fit.
A hockey-style helmet protects the head and face in one piece and is the most common choice today. The two-piece option, a facemask with a separate skull cap, is the old-school setup some catchers still prefer for visibility. Skull caps only come in adult sizes, so young catchers under 12 wear the hockey-style helmet. Browse catcher’s helmets and masks.
Measure from the gap at the base of the neck to the navel, then compare with the brand’s size chart. Once on, have the catcher get into a crouch: the bottom of the protector shouldn’t limit movement. Many mid to high-end models also include an adjustable shoulder guard for the throwing arm.
Measure from the middle of the kneecap to the top of the instep. When fitted, the kneecap should sit on the centre padding of the knee shell, even in the crouch, and the foot and inner ankle should be covered. Shop catcher’s leg guards.
Yes. Fastpitch catchers can find sets and individual pieces designed for women and girls, and complete their setup with a softball catcher’s mitt or a youth fastpitch catcher’s mitt.
