Most players need three things: a glove conditioner to keep the leather soft, a break-in product like a mallet when the glove is new, and a glove wrap or protector to hold its shape between games. A re-lace kit is also handy to fix a broken lace quickly.

  • Conditioners, like Wilson Pro Stock or Rawlings Glovolium, clean and moisturize the leather to prevent drying and cracking.

  • Oils, like Mizuno Strong Oil or mink oil, soften stiff leather and are often used during break-in.

  • Balms and butters, like Bruce Bolt Leather Balm or Rawlings Gold Glove Butter, are thicker and nourish the leather deeply.

A few times per season is usually enough, plus once before storing it for the winter. Apply a thin layer with a cloth and let it absorb. Too much product makes the leather heavy and floppy, so less is more. Browse our glove care products.

Yes, oil-based products like mink oil can darken lighter leather over time. If you want to keep your glove’s original colour, test the product on a small area first or choose a lighter conditioner or cream.

A glove mallet, like the Rawlings, Mizuno or Marucci mallets, is used to pound the pocket and shape it the way you want. Hit the pocket repeatedly where the ball will land, and work the glove along its natural break point. It’s a great complement to playing catch. Shop all glove break-in products, or skip the wait with our Mitt Master glove break-in service.

Yes. Broken laces are the most common glove repair, and you don’t need to replace the glove. A Rawlings re-lace or lacing kit includes the tools you need, and leather laces are also sold individually. Re-lacing early prevents the glove from losing its shape.
