Playing catch is still the best method, because it shapes the pocket exactly where the ball lands. The fastest results come from combining it with a glove mallet to pound the pocket, and a light coat of break-in oil or conditioner to soften the leather. For a glove that’s ready right away, try our Mitt Master glove break-in service.

It depends on the leather. Youth gloves and soft leathers, like many youth baseball gloves, are often game-ready in a few days. Kip leather, like Rawlings Pro Preferred, usually takes a couple of weeks. Stiff premium steerhide, like Heart of the Hide or Wilson A2000, can take several weeks of regular use.

Put the glove on, or hold it open, and pound the pocket where you want the ball to sit. Then fold the glove along its natural break point and work the heel and fingers. Do a few minutes every day rather than one long session. We carry mallets from Rawlings, Mizuno and Marucci, plus the Rawlings Glove Break-In Kit.

A small amount helps, but too much is one of the most common mistakes. Excess oil makes the leather heavy and floppy, and the glove can lose its structure. Apply a thin coat with a cloth, let it absorb, and add more only if the leather still feels dry. Products like Mizuno Strong Oil, Rawlings Glovolium and Gold Glove Butter are made for this.

Shaving cream can dry out the leather over time and is not recommended. Sleeping on a glove or storing it under a mattress can flatten the pocket in the wrong spot. A better option is to put a ball in the pocket and secure it with a glove wrap overnight.

  • Infielders want a shallower pocket for quick transfers. Break the glove in so it closes from the pinky to the thumb. See our infield gloves.

  • Outfielders want a deeper pocket to secure fly balls. See our outfield gloves.

  • Catchers need the most work, since catcher’s mitts are heavily padded. Focus on making the mitt close between the thumb and pinky.

The method is the same, but softball gloves need a deeper pocket for the bigger ball. Work the pocket with a softball rather than a baseball when using a mallet or a glove wrap. This applies to fastpitch gloves and slowpitch gloves.
