Your lead (sliding) hand - the one that reaches the bag first - which is usually the opposite of your fielding glove hand.
Size by hand: youth mitts fit smaller hands, adult mitts fit teens and up. Round out base-running protection with padded sliding shorts.
Most leagues don't require one, but it's strongly recommended for headfirst sliders - check your league's equipment policy if you're unsure.
It's less essential if you only slide feet-first, but many players still wear one for added protection in case of a headfirst dive on a close play at the bag.
